Grant Street Methodist Church

Title

Grant Street Methodist Church

Description

A large group of people gathered for a group portrait in front of the Grant Street Methodist Church on Fifth Avenue and Grant Street. According to the church's' history published in 1967, the photograph was taken for a 35th anniversary celebration on March 19, 1938. The girls dressed in kimonos were likely part of the program for that day. The Grant Street Methodist Church served a largely Japanese American congregation from 1936 to 1958, when the congregation built the Highland Park United Methodist Church near Grant Park. Prior to the acquisition of the church in 1936, the Japanese Methodist Church gathered in a building on 3rd Avenue.
