Witness Attestation for Sue Ah Yen

Description

The 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act was passed to curb immigrant laborers from China from entering the United States. Part of this law denied reentry to Chinese laborers leaving the United States. As a result, Chinese merchants, like Sue Ah Yen needed to file an application for leave and reentry to the United States before traveling internationally. This application required attestations and interviews vouching for the Chinese traveler's legal residence in the United States. This is attestation is part of an application for leave in 1918.
