Japanese Methodist Mission Kindergarten Portrait

Title

Japanese Methodist Mission Kindergarten Portrait

Description

The Japanese Methodist Mission in Spokane was founded in 1902 above the home of Reverend Genshichi Tsuruta. Initially, the mission served young men migrating to Spokane for work or school, but by 1910, when the church ran services out of a building on 2nd Avenue, the church began services for women, as well, run by Mrs. John Ellis. Mrs. Ellis, the wife of the church's pastor, ran classes on cooking and sewing based on American customs and other programs to help Japanese immigrant mothers.
