Description
By the 1930s, the first American-born generation of Japanese Americans began to come of age. This generation were called Nisei, which translates to second generation (the immigrant generation were called Issei). This portrait is of a group of Spokane-area Nisei and is part of a scrapbook documenting the history of Japanese Methodist Church prior to the construction of the Highland Park United Methodist Church in 1958. Many of these young men are the sons of leaders in the community, including Joe Okamoto and Shingo Hirata, who are the sons of Joe Okamoto and Frank Hirata.
