Title

Wing Wo Chinese Medicine Co. and Citizen's Savings and Loan Society Storefront on 126 1/2 Wall Street

Description

The Wing Wo Chinese Medicine Company in Spokane was established in 1905 by Hoy Gar (also known as Hoy Sam). Hoy was born in Portland, Oregon in 1869 and started his medicine shop on 126 1/2 Wall Street in 1905.The store likely operated on the second floor of the building. While the company primarily served the needs of Spokane's Chinese community, a March 12, 1926 article in the Spokesman-Review about Hoy Gar's funeral suggested he was a popular figure amongst a caucasian and African American Spokanites, as well. The store eventually moved to West 917 Sprague Avenue on July 27, 1953.
