Hoy Gar Funeral

Title

Hoy Gar Funeral

Description

Hoy Gar, owner of the Wing Wo Chinese Medicine Company in Spokane, Washington, died on February 27, 1926 from an appendicitis. A popular figure within both Spokane's Chinese American community and in Spokane at large, Hoy's funeral drew hundreds of mourners. This photograph was taken across the street from Hoy's home on Boone Avenue and Maple Street, which is where the funeral procession began. Pall bearers carry Hoy's casket to the hearse parked in front of the house. A small marching band plays in front of the hearse and walked led the procession route according to an article in the Spokesman-Review titled "Chinese Funeral Draws Throngs". The photograph provides visual scale for the ceremony, which took place on an apparently chilly March day.
