Was She Abducted?

Title

Was She Abducted?

Description

One of the most prominent Chinese American families in Spokane during the late-19th and early-20th century was the Ah Yen family. While local newspaper coverage of the Ah Yens reflects a measure of esteem for the prominent family, many articles are marked by a degree of sensationalism. This article is one of a handful about the marriage of Gum Sing, Sue Ah Yen and Gee Ah Yen's daughter. In 1901, Gum Sing married Fong Chung against her parents wishes. The coverage of the saga concludes with the birth of a grandchild in 1903, which, according to an article in the Spokesman-Review, bridged the rift in the family.
