"Black Athletes Challenged Standards Proposal"
Title
"Black Athletes Challenged Standards Proposal"
Description
Article from the Eastern Washington University (EWU) student newspaper about whether athletic coaches can enforce policies limiting the political expression of student athletes on the playing field. The issue was raised after a number of Black student athletes began the practice of raising a fist during the National Anthem similar to U.S. Olympians Juan Carlos and Tommie Smith during the 1968 Olympics. At EWU the event was known as the "Clenched Fist Controversy."
