Title
A name given to the resource
Spokane Homes
Description
An account of the resource
Due to its rapid economic and population growth between 1890 and 1910, Spokane has a unique collection of historic homes representing popular architectural styles from the turn of the 20th century.
The images of this collection are a mixture of both historic architectural photos and recent images of historic homes taken on both black and white and color film of homes mostly built in this era. There are views of both mansions and more modest upper-middle class and middle class homes including those of socially and politically active families.
Of special interest is a series of photographs taken of the interior of the Gandy home. Dr. Joseph Gandy was a local physician during the pioneer era and, later, a real estate developer of downtown property. The images in this series show typical furnishings and clothing of a prosperous professional family in the 1890s.
Also of note is a 1948 image of one of the 73 houses built nationwide and then raffled off to promote the Cary Grant comedy Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House.
