"The Washington Water Power Company was in the transportation business from 1891 until 1945. Ridership on the company's rail system peaked in 1910 when the system carried nearly 25 million passengers. The huge increase in riders led the company to install a semaphore block signal system which included an automatic train stop feature to prevent running a red signal."
