Title
A name given to the resource
Spokane River
Description
An account of the resource
The Spokane River flows from its origin at Lake Coeur d'Alene to meet the Columbia near the former site of Fort Spokane. Over the course of its human history, the approximately 110 miles of river have been used for trade, irrigation, drinking water, industry, power generation and recreation. The historical development of the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene region has been intimately tied to the river and its aquifer, as the clustering of urban and agricultural communities along its length testifies. A prominent feature is a series of waterfalls in the heart of the city of Spokane.
This sampling of black and white images chronicles the evolution of the river from the early years of photography in the Inland Northwest until the middle of the twentieth century. Images centered on the Upper and Lower Falls show the growth of the city during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and their variety of uses by humans. The changing human landscape contrasts with the size and grandeur of the waterfalls.
Additional photographs in this collection document notable natural locations along the river's length, especially the so-called "Bowl and Pitcher" basalt formation. Located several miles downstream from the falls, this feature has been a popular picnic and recreation destination since the 19th century.

Spokane Bridges
Description
An account of the resource
As a railroad hub situated on a major tributary of the Columbia River, Spokane is a city where bridges are prominent local and regional landmarks. Like much of the city, these bridges have undergone periods of construction, demolition and reconstruction that reflect changes in national modes of transportation, the economy of the region and the architectural aspirations of the city.
These photographs show the diversity of bridges which spanned the Spokane River and its tributaries from the 1880s until the middle years of the twentieth century. Historic images of major standing bridges such as the modern Monroe Street Bridge and the Hangman/Latah Creek Bridge are complemented by views of shorter-lived structures such as their immediate predecessors and the Cable Street Bridge.
The majority of these images are in black and white, but there are some sepia toned and hand-tinted images in the collection.

Northwest Dams
Description
An account of the resource
Rivers in the Northwest are tamed by dams throughout the region, not only changing the landscape, but altering the way of life. Early settlers depended on dams to irrigate their farms; trying to control nature was the only way to make farming in the Northwest successful. Washington is also home the largest source of hydroelectric power, the Grand Coulee Dam. This mammoth structure is considered a Wonder of the World and has attracted tourists worldwide since its construction. The continued dependence on dams has made Washington and the Northwest a top agricultural producer in the United States and the largest manufacturer of electricity in the nation.

Idaho Towns
Description
An account of the resource
The discovery of gold in Northern Idaho in 1882 was the catalyst for the establishment of the first settlements and towns in the Idaho Territory. Many of these towns started as mining camps built close to ore deposits, and depended on the mines to remain viable. When the ore was depleted, the population moved elsewhere. Many of the towns in this collection including Burke, Delta, Gem, Mace, Mt. Idaho and Murray are now ghost towns. Coeur d'Alene and Wallace became centers for mining and still thrive today, along with Lewiston and Post Falls. The photos in this collection range from the 1880s through 1932.

Spokane Views
Description
An account of the resource
In the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century, Spokane was one of the largest cities of the American West. As a center for rail traffic, only the major ports of the Pacific Coast and the railway hubs of Denver and Salt Lake City equaled or exceeded it as population centers. Its rapid economic and population growth would stagnate in the interwar years. Despite this, demolition, construction and reconstruction continued to shape and reshape the cityscape in subtle ways prior to the 1974 World's Fair.
These images sample architectural and city views of Spokane from the 1890s until the early 1970s.
Included are wide-angle panoramas of major city streets, high-angle views from office buildings, photographs shot from natural heights and aerial photographs. Most photos contains major scenic architectural features such as the Monroe Street Bridge, downtown skyscrapers, South Hill mansions and the Spokane County courthouse. A small but significant portion of those photographs show industrial scenes and landscapes.

Description
An account of the resource
When European explorers began their exploration of the Pacific Northwest in the 1700s, they saw a land filled with resources and opportunity. The Northwest, filled with a rich natural resources, became one of the top suppliers of raw materials for the United States, Britain and France. In the 21st century, the integration of nature with the urban cities or the rural countryside is part of the cultural heritage that makes the Northwest.
The photographs shown in this collection are of towns of varying sizes across the state of Washington, which were all founded for the gathering of these raw materials, including minerals, lumber, and agricultural goods.
These pictures illustrate the growth of Washington from purely a resource supplier to a functioning, industrialized society from the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century.

Scenic Northwest
Description
An account of the resource
The landscapes of the Pacific Northwest have been shaped by millions of years of volcanic activity, creating spectacular peaks and mountains. Enormous fresh water lakes appeared later when Ice Age glaciers blocked swollen rivers nearly 15,000 years ago. These geologic events resulted in a varied backdrop of picturesque features unique to the area. The photographs included in the Scenic Northwest collection are a sampling of the most scenic locations in the region. Included are waterfalls, lakes, rivers, mountains, beaches and canyons. Most of the prints are black and white but some hand-tinted prints by Spokane scenic photographer Frank Palmer are included.

Title
A name given to the resource
Spokane Parks
Description
An account of the resource
In 1907, an Olmsted Brothers plan recommended the construction of four large and five smaller new parks and the extensive renovations of the existing parks in Spokane. This plan had been commissioned by Aubrey L. White, who was both the first president of the newly formed Parks Board and a local champion of the City Beautiful movement.
Inspired by the White City of the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the City Beautiful movement believed that harmonious urban planning could eliminate social disorder, crime and poverty. The elements of the plan built by Spokane at the close of the 1900s and beginning of the 1910s did not achieve those grandiose goals but they did leave it with an endowment of public spaces.
This collection features Spokane parks spanning the whole of the 20th century. There are historic views of Manito Park and its gardens at different points during the century. Additionally, there is a selection of images of Natatorium Park and the original Liberty Park, both of which were demolished during the 1960s. Finally, a series of images chronicles Riverfront Park from its origins following Expo '74 to the turn of the 21st century. Photographs typically include both visitors and noteworthy park features.

Washington Towns
These pictures illustrate the growth of Washington from purely a resource supplier to a functioning, industrialized society from the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century.

Northwest Agriculture
Description
An account of the resource
The Palouse, also known as the bread basket of the nation, began producing wheat in the nineteenth century. By 1910, the region was producing so much wheat that it had become Washington's most valuable commodity crop, making Whitman County the richest county (per capita) in the United States. Agriculture in the region became a big business, suing the best tools available. Mules or horses pulled reapers and combines and steam-powered threshing machines worked to bring in the crop. The annual harvest was the central event of the year, employing an army of itinerant laborers. By the mid-1930s, mules and horses had become obsolete, replaced by gasoline powered machinery. In addition to wheat farming, fruit orchards have long played a noteworthy role in the region and cattle ranching maintains its iconic status in the West.

Postcards
Description
An account of the resource
Invented in 1869, picture postcards first appeared in the United States in 1873. Postcards soon became a popular means of communication, requiring only a penny's worth of postage. Simple and inexpensive, tourists also began collecting postcards as an ideal keepsake souvenir of places visited. They became a major collector's item between 1904 and 1912, an era often referred to as the “Golden Age” of the postcard. The popularity of the postcard continued with the real photo postcard. With manufacturers able to print thousands of copies of a particular image, postcard racks appeared at every tourist attraction.
As in other Western cities, Spokane boosters used postcards to promote tourism and create souvenirs. They also boasted of the scenery with pictures of mountains, streams, and other natural views.

Northwest Indian Portraits
Description
An account of the resource
The portraits in this digital collection include a variety of images from the late 19th and early 20th centuries covering various tribes throughout the Inland Northwest. Some of the images are of well-known individuals, such as Chief Joseph or Princess Angeline while others are completely unidentified. There are many images of members of the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene Tribes taken at local events.
